What is Pilates?

Over 75 years ago Joseph Pilates developed his own system of core strengthening exercises for overall body conditioning. These exercises target the “powerhouse,” or core muscles—stomach, back, hips, inner thighs, and buttocks—with the quality of the movement having more importance than the quantity. There are two ways to practice Pilates. Equipment sessions include of a series of exercises utilizing springs, pulleys, and moving platforms that act as resistance for the body. Mat sessions are group classes that consist of a variety of core strengthening exercises, with the body creating its own resistance.
