Patty & Del Collins

Celeste Neuman

Patty and Del Collins

Q: How long have you taken Pilates at BodyWork?

A:  Del and I began taking Pilates in September 2004.

Q: Why did you decide to try Pilates?

A:  We decided to try Pilates on the advice from my physical therapist in UK Sports Medicine (Cookie Freidhoff, BodyWork Instructor) and my orthopedic surgeon,

Dr. Jeff Selby.  I was in therapy after two hip replacements and needed considerable rehabilitation.  Cookie started me on some Pilates exercises to do at home to strengthen my abdomen and legs.  Del was somewhat interested and agreed to go to the Duet class with me.

Q: What are some of the physical changes you have noticed in each other, as well as yourselves?

A: We are both stronger, have greater sense of balance and much, much more flexibility.  I can now walk up stairs and my endurance has improved dramatically.  Del has lost 16 pounds, two inches across his chest, two inches from his waist, one inch from his neck and his posture is greatly improved.  While I haven’t lost weight, I have lost one inch around my middle.

Q: Joseph Pilates made this promise: “You will feel better in 10 sessions. Look better in 20 sessions, and have a completely new body in 30 sessions.” Is this a valid promise?

A: Definitely. We both feel so much better and look forward to coming to the Duet sessions. In addition, we do the exercises at home.

Q: Has it made a difference taking Pilates together instead of individually?

A: Exercising together is fun and competitive for us. It is a great hour to spend together with Cookie.  She is such a motivator and has keen eye for our weaknesses. She is the reason for our success.

Q: What would you say to a person who has never tried Pilates but would like to begin?

A: Try it. The rewards are greater strength, balance and endurance.  Del would be the first to tell you that he was not very enthusiastic in the beginning but once he gained core strength and mastered the exercises, Pilates also became a stress reliever for him.

Q: What other forms of exercise did you do prior to Pilates?

A: I walked two to three miles twice a week.

Q: How long have you taken Pilates?

A: Since May of this year. The sessions were a gift from my husband, and he has continued my sessions.

Q: What has Pilates done for you?

A: A lot. I am much more flexible and most importantly, I think, I am stronger and my muscles look leaner. My whole body shape is better.

Q: Joseph Pilates made this promise: “You will feel better in 10 sessions.  Look better in 20 sessions, and have a completely new body in 30 sessions.” Is this a valid promise?

A: Well, yes it is. Except I should have been doing this long before now, like in my 30's. I don't have a completely new body yet but I am working on it. At my age it is taking a little longer to "remodel" the body. But I am more flexible and stronger and I feel great.

Q: What would you say to a person who has never tried Pilates but would like to in the future?

A: Try it, I think you would like it. There are sessions that are more demanding on you in terms of technique but once you get the hang of it you can do it and do it well. The sessions are not easy and you can get your heart rate up. But you work in increments - as you get stronger the exercise gets more demanding. You work according to your ability in the private sessions and mat classes. Also you are watched carefully to make sure you are doing it correctly and safely.
